Japan is per-visit, not rolling annual
Unlike Schengen, Japan's visa-free stay limit applies to each individual visit. There is no official rule counting your total days per calendar year. However, border officers can and do refuse entry to travelers who appear to be living in Japan through repeated visa-free stays.
Digital tracking — all entries and exits are recorded
Japan's immigration system fully records all entries and exits. Attempting to "hide" prior trips by using a new passport or other means is illegal and detectable.
